The perfect cozy winter earwarmer is absolutely essential in my wardrobe. With colder weather here to stay for a few months, gloves and a coat won’t cut it for me. I love going on walks and when I have to walk my dogs, my poor ears always suffer. This year, with some spare yarn I wanted to de-stash, I picked up my hook and got to work on this headband earwarmer. The Cozy Wave Headband is such a simple pattern to crochet and can be made in just a few quick hours. This also makes a great gift or an easy piece to whip up to sell at craft fairs.

The Cozy Wave Headband is a lighter weight headband great for milder winter days or when you don’t plan on being outside in frigid temps for too long. For days when you need a thick, warm cover, I recommend trying the Trella Headband (& matching scarf!)

My favorite feature of this pattern is actually the fun border on the top and bottom of the headband. I used a twisted single crochet stitch, otherwise known as crab stitch. It provides such a simple yet elegant border that just gives the piece a more “finished” look to it.

What you need to make this crochet earwarmer

  • Weight 3 / DK weight yarn
    • I used indie dyed yarn from Red Door Fibre Studio, but you can use any weight 3 yarn that meets gauge! A great substitute would be Swish DK from knitpicks.
  • 4.00mm crochet hook (or hook needed to meet gauge)
  • Scissors & tapestry needle to weave in ends

Stitches used in this pattern

My goal for this pattern was to use simple stitches to put together an overall fun look. The list of stitches used is below.

  • ch – chain
  • sl st – slip stitch
  • sp – space
  • hdc – half double crochet
  • dc – double crochet
  • 4tog – four together (i.e. dc4tog means dc 4 together)
  • rsc – crab stitch
    • insert hook into stitch and pull up a loop like you would for a regular single crochet. Then pull the two loops on hook up slightly, twist your hook around 360 degrees, then YO and pull through the 2 loops.

Border

Rnd 1: Without cutting or tying off your working yarn, ch 1 & turn. Rsc into each st around, then sl st into beginning ch. Cut & tie off, then flip the headband to complete the same process into the initial starting chain of the pattern. For this portion, attach your yarn where the initial starting chain began. Ch 1 and turn, then rsc into each sp along the bottom of the headband, ending by creating a sl st into the beginning ch. Then cut & tie off this portion.

Finishing

Weave in all ends. If you prefer blocking, I’d recommend only lightly blocking (possibly spray blocking). This is a headband designed to be stretched a bit to fit your head so it will have a little give.
