About the Floral Bucket Bag Pattern

What better design inspiration for a crochet pattern than an upcoming trip? I really wanted a simple, yet playful small bag that was perfect for a date night or vacation that had a floral-inspired accent but otherwise a simple construction. And from that, behold, this beautiful pattern I’m absolutely obsessed with.

This bag pattern features a flat circular base and includes instructions for making sure you get the perfect flat circle. No wavy edges or cupping here! The construction is mostly double crochet stitching, with the exception of the floral accent rows and is worked from the bottom up.

You can add a sturdy base to this pattern for the perfect flat-bottomed bag or leave it as is and have a more flexible base. For my sample, I haven’t yet added a bottom as I do love the look it has when folded in half.

Materials & Tools

  • Weight 4 yarn – I recommend using a stiffer yarn like cotton, you’ll need approximately 185 yds.
    • for my sample I used Lion Brand 24/7 Cotton in the color Ecru (100% mercerized cotton), 3.5 oz/100g, 186 yds/170 m)
  • 4mm hook (or hook needed to meet gauge)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle to weave in ends

Pattern Notes

  • This pattern is worked in the round, starting with a magic circle from the bottom up
  • Where marked, chains in the pattern count as a stitch

Gauge & Sizing Info

  • 16 sts x 8 rows = 4″, worked in dc
  • Finished sizing is approx. 7.5″H x 6″W, measured across the diameter

  • Beg-ch – beginning chain
  • Ch – chain
  • Ch-sp – chain space
  • Sp – space

Floral Bucket Bag Pattern

Start off with a magic circle. If you need a quick tutorial, this one from All About Ami is great.

Rnd 1 (RS): Ch 2 (does not count as a st). In the magic circle, work 8 dcs, then sl st to the first st made. [8 sts] Rounds 1-9 will be worked FLAT. If you end up with a circle that cups, work the prior rounds again until the circle lays flat [i.e. if you previously worked 4 dc, then 2 in the same st, keep repeating that row until the circle is laying flat again]. If you end up with a circle that is wavy, add 1 st to the single st part of the pattern repeat [i.e. if you were working 4 sts, then 2 in the same st, work 5, then 2 in the same st] and keep increasing that repeat until your circle lays flat. A good example of fixing the flat circle can be at this link from Shelley Husband Crochet. As long as your circle lays flat in 9 rows, you can move on to row 10.

Rnd 2 (WS): Ch 2 and turn (counts as a st here and throughout unless otherwise noted). Dc in the next st (this will count as 2 dc in the same sp). Work 2 dc in each st around until the beginning. Sl st into the beg ch-sp. [16 sts]

Rnd 3: Ch 2 and turn. Dc in the next st (this will count as 2 dc in the same sp). *Dc in the next st, then work 2 dc in the next st*; repeat from * to * until the end, working a dc into the last st. Sl st into the beg-ch. [24 sts]

Rnd 4: Ch 2 and turn. Dc in the next st (this will count as 2 dc in the same sp). *Dc in the next 2 sts, then work 2 dc in the next st*; repeat from * to * until the end, working a dc into the last 2 sts. Sl st into the beg-ch. [32 sts]

Rnd 5: Ch 2 and turn. Dc in the next st (this will count as 2 dc in the same sp). *Dc in the next 3 sts, then work 2 dc in the next st*; repeat from * to * until the end, working a dc into the last 3 sts. Sl st into the beg-ch. [40 sts]

Rnd 6: Ch 2 and turn. Dc in the next st (this will count as 2 dc in the same sp). *Dc in the next 4 sts, then work 2 dc in the next st*; repeat from * to * until the end, working a dc into the last 4 sts. Sl st into the beg-ch. [48 sts]

Rnd 7: Ch 2 and turn. Dc in the next st (this will count as 2 dc in the same sp). *Dc in the next 4 sts, then work 2 dc in the next st*; repeat from * to * until the end, working a dc into the last 2 sts. Sl st into the beg-ch. [58 sts]

Rnd 8: Ch 2 and turn. Dc in the next st (this will count as 2 dc in the same sp). *Dc in the next 4 sts, then work 2 dc in the next st*; repeat from * to * until the end, working a dc into the last 2 sts. Sl st into the beg-ch. [70 sts]

Rnd 9: Ch 1 and turn. Sl st FLO in the next st (this will count as 2 sts in the same sp). *Sl st FLO in the next 4 sts, then work 2 sl st FLO in the next st*; repeat from * to * until the end. Sl st into the beg-ch. [84 sts] This will be final row of the flat circle portion. Next, we will be working the “walls” of the bag.

Rnds 10-19: Ch 2 and turn. Dc in each st around until the end. Sl st into the beg-ch. [84 sts]

Rnd 20: Ch 10 and turn, then sl st into the first st (does not count as a st). Ch 10, then sl st into the same st. *Sl st into the next 11 sts, then sl st into the next st and [ch 10, sl st into the same st] 3 times in the next st.* Repeat from * to * until the last 12 sts. Sl st into the last 12 sts, then ch 10 and sl st into the base of the beg-ch to form the final loop of the 3 loops at the beginning of the row. [21 ch-10 loops/7 3-loop clusters] (photo below shows what this should look like)

row 20 of the floral bucket bag crochet pattern

Rnd 21: Ch 1 and turn (does not count as a st). Work a sc into each ch around the 3 loops and into the 11 sl sts between each loop. Don’t work a sl st into the base sl st at the base of each of the 3 loops – only the loops themselves and the 11 sts in between. When you reach the end of the row and have completed a sc into each sp around each loop, sl st into the base of the first loop made. [287 sts]

Rnd 22: Ch 1 and turn (does not count as a st). Sl st into the next 6 sts. *Ch 2, then work a sl st into the middle 2 sts of the next loop*; repeat from * to * across the row. You will only be working 2 sl sts into the middle of each loop, skipping all other sts in between. When you reach the end, ch 2, then sl st into the 4th sl st created to join (above a sl-st previously worked in this row, does not count as a st). This will complete the round. [88 sts]

Rnd 23: For this round, ch 1 but do not turn (does not count as a st). Work a sc in the next st. *Ch 3, skip next 3 sts, then dc in the next st. Ch 3, skip next 3 sts, then dc in the next st. Ch 3, skip next 3 sts, then sc in the next st*; repeat from * to * until the end. At the end, ch 3, then sl st into the beg-ch to end the round (does not count as a st). [84 sts]

Rnd 26: Ch 2 and turn. Dc in the next 13 sts. Ch 14, skip next 14 st, then dc in the next 28 sts. Ch 14, skip next 14 sts, then dc in the next 14 sts. Sl st into the beg-ch. [84 sts]
