I have had the most fun getting to design and work on this top! Back in February I had this awesome idea for an open-backed top. I was totally unsure if I could pull it off or not but I got right to work on it and my sample was done in no time. I discovered the most amazing stitch in the process too, the trinity stitch! It’s similar to the star stitch but so much simpler.

If you’re looking for a new spring & summer staple, this is it! Quick to work up and so much wonderful texture PLUS an open back for some extra breeze.

Pin for later!

Attaching Body Panels:

With right sides facing each other, seam the back body panels to the front body panel from bottom to top, leaving the specified measurements open for the arm holes (see sizing chart)

Seam across the tops of the shoulders as well. You can choose to seam all the way across the top of both back panels but if the fit is too tight around the neckline, you can leave more space on each side of the neckline.

Crochet sleeve, trinity stitch.

Sleeves:

Sleeves are worked in the round. With top turned right side out, attach yarn at the armpit portion of the sleeve where the seam from the panel is and ch1.

Row 1: sc in first st, work trinity st over current st & next 2 sts. *Ch1, work trinity st over current st and next 2 sts.*; repeat from * across to end, then sl st into the beginning ch. (note: Do not ch1 before the sl st into the beginning ch. You may not complete a trinity st at the final stitch before the end of the row. Work as far as you can and then sl st.)

Row 2-9: (2-9, 2-11, 2-11, 2-12, 2-12, 2-13, 2-14): Ch1, do not turn. Sc in first st, work trinity st over current st, & next 2 sts. *Ch1, work trinity st over current st and next 2 sts.*; repeat from * across to end, then sl st into the beginning ch. (note: Do not ch1 before the sl st into the beginning ch. You may not complete a trinity st at the final stitch before the end of the row. Work as far as you can and then sl st. All sleeve rows should be the same as the previous row so the sleeve is even.

Row 10 (10, 12, 12, 13, 13, 14, 15): Ch5. Skip first 3 sts, tr in next st, *ch3, skip next 3 sts, tr in next st*; repeat from * across to end, ending with a sl st into beginning ch.

Row 11 – 16 (11-16, 13-18, 13-18, 14-19, 14-19, 15-20, 16-21): Ch1, do not turn. All sleeve rows should be the same as the previous row so the sleeve is even.)

Creating Lace Up in Back:

Place stitch markers at even intervals up both sides of the back panels, starting from the bottom. I chose to use approx. 2.5” between each stitch marker.

Starting at the bottom-most stitch marker, attach your yarn and chain 17 (17, 17, 24, 24, 24, 31, 31) and connect to the opposite side stitch marker via a sl st. Repeat this process until you’ve connected each bar between each stitch marker. You may not have a bar going across the very top of the piece by the neckline and that is fine, so long as all the rest of the bars are spaced evenly.

Tie in all ends.

Blocking:

I used wet blocking for this piece. I recommend either of the below 2 methods;

  1. Wash your garment and lay flat on blocking boards/foam/a towel to dry & pin down to block.
  2. Using blocking boards/foam/a towel, pin out your piece and lightly steam to block.

Let dry & you’re done!
