Cotton Creme Yarn from Michaels Stores

Let’s get right into this yarn review! Today I’ll be talking all about cotton creme yarn from Michael’s stores. You can head to your local Michaels to grab this or order it online from them here.

What first intrigued me about his yarn was how SOFT it was to the touch. As I was browsing the aisles for a new yarn to try out, this one really caught my attention. After I had looked at almost every skein they had, I kept coming back to this one.

I’m so happy that I went back and grabbed this yarn because it was definitely worth it. It did have a few drawbacks, which I find with a lot of cotton yarns, but the pros were definitely there too. Keep reading for the full review.

Feel

As I mentioned earlier, upon first touch this yarn was super soft. You can definitely still tell that it’s a cotton yarn but most cotton yarns just don’t feel this plushie. My next question for this yarn (and my hope for it) was if it would feel just as soft once it was worked into a fabric. Let me tell you, I was not disappointed!

I worked up a swatch of this yarn in a simple stitch and it still felt so soft! Although not as smooth as it felt in a skein, which is to be expected, it was still soft to the touch and felt good against my skin. A lot of cotton yarns have a rougher feel and aren’t always soft to the touch, especially against skin. That’s why many cotton yarns make great scrubbies, dish towels, and keychains.

This yarn was definitely so much different than other cotton yarns I’ve experienced and in a great way. Softer and sleeker, this is definitely a great choice for garments.

Stitch Definition

This yarn definitely has a “squishier” texture to it. When working it up I do notice that when the stitches are tighter, the yarn kind of molds into the stitch and squishes into it, giving it a less defined look. I’ll say that when worked more loosely or in a lace-type design, this yarn would have a great stitch definition. If you’re working a solid stitch pattern, the definition is not bad, it’s still defined, just not as sharp as some other yarns.

My personal opinion is that the softness of this yarn is worth some of the less sharp stitch definition it has, especially for a comfortable garment design. If this yarn was not so soft, it would be more defined but may not be as cozy to work with.

Overall, the stitch definition is up to par with a lot of standard craft store yarns. If you’re looking for an extremely crisp stitch definition, I’d go with something more sturdy but this yarn works great for just about everything from garments to blankets and more.

Drape

The drape of this yarn was surprisingly great. I normally find cotton yarns to be stiffer and better suited to home decor items or bags. Out of 10, I’d give the drape on this a 6 or 7. For a cotton yarn, it’s amazing but in general, it doesn’t have the loose, easy drape of a softer or lighter yarn. Overall, I think the drape is perfect for a good crochet top.

I actually believe this yarn is perfect for a crochet bralette (or even some crochet shorts!). I actually designed a bralette using this yarn, the pattern will be coming out soon! (If you can’t wait for a good bralette though, you can check out my Heatherette Bralette pattern here).

Recommendations

So I wanted to give a few recommendations based on my experience working with this yarn. Firstly, I wanted to talk about the hook size recommendation given on the label versus what I found worked best for me. The label classifies this yarn as a medium weight 4 yarn but I find this to be closer to a weight 3 yarn since it’s thinner than a typical worsted weight yarn. Additionally, the label recommended a 6-6.5mm hook and I found that size to be quite large unless you were looking for a more open-stitch look.

I ended up going with a 4mm hook for the swatch I did and for the pattern I ended up designing as well. I felt that this hook size provided a great fabric that was not see-through but still maintained a good drape for a garment.

Some types of patterns I’d recommend using this yarn for are garments of any kind and lighter home decor or accessory items. A pattern I think this yarn would work great for is the Floria Top which is a great spring and summer piece. It would probably also work for a summer sarong like the Lace Harbor Sarong pattern. I think this yarn is absolutely perfect for a crocheted top. It’s soft to the touch and has a good enough drape to look great when worn.

Yarn Review Overall Score

My final score for this yarn is a 7/10. This year definitely surprised me in many ways – first with how soft it was and then with how well it draped when worked into a garment. I will say though, that this yarn still has its limitations, in my opinion. I don’t think it would stand up to certain home decor patterns since it’s on the thinner side and is so soft.

This is definitely a yarn I’ll be working with again and would highly recommend it if you’re looking for a new yarn to try out. I especially recommend this if you’re looking for a cotton yarn that’s still comfortable to wear.

If you’d love to give this yarn a try, you can order some from Michael’s here or even get it via Amazon if Michael’s delivery isn’t available in your area!
