Planning out your social media content can be a PROJECT. From taking good photos to planning out captions & social media strategies, there is a lot that goes into keeping your social media content put together. I have learned a lot (and will continue to learn more) about planning out my content and how to set a schedule that will work for me.

These are my social media planning tips that have gotten me through even the most stressful weeks.

1. Download & use a planning app

I personally use Tailwind for my planning needs but there are other platforms such as Hootsuite that offer similar products. These will allow you to plan your photos & captions all in one place and even post for you so you don’t have to remember to post every day. I like to plan out my content 1-2 weeks in advance so that even if I have busy days or a week where I can’t create new content, my feed isn’t running dry.

Another benefit of planning all your content is the time you’ll save to work on other aspects of your business. Although social media is extremely important to draw attention to your brand, it shouldn’t be the activity that takes up 90% of your time. Planning out your content will give you more time to create blog posts, new item listings, and actually create and work on your products! I cannot stress enough how important this has been to me. It has allowed me to increase the amount of time I have to create new patterns, work out the math and work with my testers so I can keep releasing more of my patterns which is at the heart of my small business.

2. Take one day to create all your photos & reels

Taking one day out of your week to get all your content creating out of the way will save you SO much time during the week. I like to jot my ideas down during the week and then use a weekend to go and take all of my photos & reels. I edit them the same day as well so that I don’t have to worry about any of that later on.

If you’re a maker or a small business, get your newest products, works in progress, and your tips/tricks ready to go and find some good lighting. Bring in some simple photo props and create new set ups to photograph all at once. I have been able to plan out almost an entire months worth of content by doing this and it is so helpful.

3. Plan your captions

Think about what your ideal customer is like. What do they want to hear about? What are their interests? What is something they may be struggling with or something you can help them with? Use these types of ideas to plan your captions. Match these up with your photo & reel ideas. I sometimes like to plan my captions separately from my photos because certain captions are applicable to multiple parts of my business and therefore could go along with multiple photos or reels I may take. By planning captions separately I can mix and match my content to my captions to find what fits best. This doesn’t work for all content, of course, but can be helpful in certain situations.

Outside of mixing & matching your captions, make sure that you have caption ideas in mind when taking your photos & reels. These types of captions will be made to match your planned media. For example, if you’re looking to showcase a certain item, you will want a caption that shows off that item. For me, that means when I do a pattern release or a call for pattern testers I make sure I have photos of my finished piece in good lighting to post alongside my planned caption about the pattern.
