The Benefits of Amazon for Business & Crochet
When I first opened YarnThrift in July I needed materials quickly and at a low cost since I was a new business (and still am). Although I LOVE supporting other small business, there were some items that I couldn’t afford to purchase through them. Things such as lighting, yarn in bulk packages, poms and tools were things I needed in order to start my business while not breaking the bank. I turned to Amazon for some of these basics and was not disappointed!
All of the products you’ll find listed in this article are tried and true by myself or my friends. I won’t recommend products without trying them first to make sure they are quality. I hope you check some of them out and if you do, drop a comment below letting me know how they turned out for you!

- Knitting Machine
It may not be “crochet” but I use my knitting machine for handmade knit pumpkins as well as beanies and ear-warmers. There are so many patterns and youtube tutorials for using these machines. I’ve found that it is SO quick to prep for markets (if you do them) and for customer orders from online sales. You can even add customized tags and logos to your products for a more personal touch.
2. Poms (in bulk!)
These poms are super easy to use. Each pom has an elastic at the bottom for easy attachment. As much as I love supporting small pom makers, I couldn’t afford nicer poms at first so I stuck to these. These are also great for those of you that do markets since they come in packs of 24 which will help save money and help you get out as many hats as possible!
3. Beginner Hook Set
This beginner hook set has all the essentials a crocheter will need to get started (minus the yarn). It even comes in its own cute carrying case which will come in super handy. Keep everything together in its own place while also ensuring you have all the essentials (and extras) you’ll need.
4. Cute Packaging (options!)
Amazon has some great options for poly mailers at great prices and in bulk. If you’ve ever wondered where I get my poly mailers – they’re from Amazon! They were very affordable when I first started YarnThrift and I love that they say “Thank You” and let my customers know how much I appreciate their business. I also accompany these by packing Thank You cards in each package, which you can get in bulk here. There are plenty of other color and design options as well.

5. Lighting
This ring light is AMAZING. It’s super affordable which is why I opted for this one instead of some of the larger, more expensive models. It has adjustable light settings to dim or brighten and it has made my photos SO crisp and clean. Below are photos of a quick set up I did and an un-edited photo I took using my phone and this ring light. Crocheters and makers need good lighting to make sure we’re getting the best shot of our hard work.
Another thing I love about this light is it is much smaller and more compact than some of the other available models. This is perfect to set up on a desktop or workspace and is a great space saver. It folds up and can be stored flat almost anywhere.
6. Yarn Bag
There just aren’t enough words to describe how great this thing is. My boyfriend got this for me for our anniversary and I’m not even kidding when I tell you I don’t go anywhere without it. It can hold 15-20 skeins of yarn depending on size AND holds all of my wips, my hooks, tools, and more. I’ve managed to fit every single hook and tool I own, 3 wips, and 10 other skeins of yarn I want to use soon. It even has back and side pockets that fit my laptop, notions kit, and planning notebooks. I used to pack plastic bags, my purse or a weekend bag with yarn and often forgot things or left yarn home but with this bag I’m never without the tools I need and am so much more organized.
7. Photo Backdrops
Love flat lays? Me too! When I first started my YarnThrift Instagram account I followed all these amazing crocheters who had beautiful flat lays and I couldn’t quite comprehend how they did all that. What surfaces were they using? Although you can use many household surfaces for great flat lays, I discovered that photo backdrops were a great way to stay consistent and create better brand image.
I ordered this reversible backdrop months ago and have been using it ever since. If you’ve seen my Instagram you’ll see I use the white wooden backdrop for almost all of my flat lay photos. It’s super durable and easy to store away when I’m not using it. It also helps keep my instagram feed consistent. I chose this backdrop not only for its versatility but also its size. Oftentimes in crochet, I don’t need a huge back drop for photos but something I can fit on a desk, worktable, or even floor. The size on this backdrop is perfect for that and give me all the space I need to take great photos.
8. Row Counters
These row counters come in bulk (so you’ll never be without one, even if you misplace a bunch like me!) I keep a bunch of these stored in my yarn bag and other scattered around where I need them. I try to have one going for every work-in-progress I have going and spare ones in my car, bedroom, and any other place I often crochet. They come in super handy and eliminate the painstaking process of counting rows by hand.
9. Wrist Guard
I’m guilty of over-crocheting (while I also believe that that is not an actual thing). I have injured my wrist at least twice since I started crocheting more. I went looking for something to stabilize my wrist while I crochet. This not only stabilized my wrist but also helped with swelling and pain. Now, when I’m working with smaller hook sizes or intricate designs, I wear this to prevent my wrist from getting over-worked.
10. Ergonomic handle
This ergonomic hook is another great addition to help the stress on your wrist. You can fit any size metal hook (Boye or other brand) into this handle! This easily transforms any hook into an ergonomic hook. This was great for me when I started crocheting more seriously because I couldn’t afford the nicer hooks yet but owned a whole set of Boye metal hooks. I was easily able to fit all of them into this handle and crocheting more easily without straining my wrist.
