What are the best fingering weight yarns for summer projects?

There are so many amazing and versatile lightweight yarns that are perfect for lightweight, summer crochet patterns. These are some of my absolute favorites to whip up summer crochet patterns with.

Indie Dyed Fingering Weight Yarns

If you’ve been following along for a while, you already know my absolute favorite fingering weight yarns are from indie dyers. I absolutely love beautiful hand dyed skeins, especially variegated colorways like I used for my Grandana Top & Ember V Neck. My favorite indie dyer is, no surprise, the wonderful Kate from Red Door Fibre Studio. Kate creates the most bold and unique colors PLUS she fits right into my fantasy book-loving lifestyle and sense of humor. Another amazing indie dyer that I often reference as the Taylor Swift of yarn is the lovely Ashleigh from Sewrella Yarn. Ashleigh creates a broad range of pretty colors from Taylor Swift themes to her newest garden collection (summer of 2024). Some other indie dyers I absolutely love are Jess of Witch Fire Fibers, Ashley of Montana Crochet, and Rachel of Zeezee Textiles.

Lion Brand Truboo

This super sleek yarn is the perfect DK weight (yes, not fingering, but we’ll get there) yarn to work up a silky summer project. Truboo is made from 100% rayon from bamboo and has drape like no other. Along with it’s sister yarn, Lion Brand Nuboo, you can work up anything from lacy summer cardigans and sarongs, to home decor like silky curtains. I absolutely LOVE how silky smooth this yarn feels on your skin and how easily it glides along my crochet hook. This yarn is a lighter weight DK yarn that can be used as a fingering weight yarn in a lot of patterns. Always double check that your gauge matches the project you’re working on, but this is a yarn I love swapping in to fingering weight patterns.

WeCrochet Shine Sport

Shine sport is another soft and sleek yarn that’s perfect for summer crochet patterns. While it is a sport weight yarn, this is another great yarn to swap for fingering weight yarn as long as your gauge works. It’s made from Pima cotton and Modal natural beech wood fiber. I got to use this yarn on one of my most popular summer patterns, the Heatherette Bralette. It feels both soft to the touch but also has a sturdiness that makes it super flexible to used in a wide variety of projects. When used in a loose or lacy pattern, it has amazing drape but it can also be used with a smaller hook or tighter stitching and provide a sturdier fabric for projects that call for it. While this isn’t a specifically fingering weight yarn, I love sizing down my hook size and crocheting sturdier patterns like bralettes like I would with a fingering weight yarn.

What other projects can I work on with fingering weight yarn?

Fingering weight yarn is so much more versatile than you’d think! While commonly used in knitting patterns, especially socks, it works up beautifully in crochet projects as well. For the summer, projects such as lightweight shawls, and home decor such as lacy curtains or fancy hand towels for the kitchen are great projects to work up as well!

Another fun idea that I absolutely love is taking an existing pattern that is made-to-measure and working it up in fingering weight yarn! As long as you are matching the gauge or adjusting your stitch count and measurements to fit properly, you can turn many patterns into fingering weight crochet patterns. One of my favorites is my Checkered Balance Shawl that can be made using any weight yarn and would make the perfect summer wrap.
